People’s Views on Health and Work

This forum was based on the work by Healthwatch, which featured views on health by employees at a local organisation. 20 individuals attended the forum which included members of the general public as well as representatives from various organisations

Summary:

Personal or close circle illness - There was conversation around an individual’s emotions, the effects when in work, social effects and the need to take time off work.  Many people commented on the fact that their focus was likely to be on other things with a genuine fear of discipline, occupational health being involved and how the situation would be dealt with by management.

Help from employers - Individuals highlighted the importance to have flexible working including the ability to work from home, alter hours or even having a temporary reduction in hours / time off.  People also thought that management skills could be improved to ensure they are approachable and personable with a strong ability to communicate.  As an addition individuals discussed the option of external support that employers could offer such as free counselling and ‘out of hours’ therapy.

New services to help people return to work - Individuals felt that an holistic approach would be most beneficial meaning ‘GP’s’ and ‘all NHS services’ should be included.  The service should also be flexible, independent and confidential.

Conclusion:

People have a great fear of the effects that illness could have on their work.  Impact on productivity and a genuine concern about disciplinary was highlighted.

Employers could help by allowing mediators, offering a more flexible approach to work and through improved communication and personal skills.

Individuals felt there was a desire and need for a new service to help support those in circumstances of ill health but this must be flexible and offer practical help and advice.
