Patients views of Autism services
We carried out engagement work with the community to find out about Autism services and how we could put forward recommendations to influence the prospectus for Greater Manchester Health and Socail Care Partnership over the next 5 years.
Key Findings
- 52% described their overall experience as negative
- 46% described their experience of getting support negative
- Only 14% described their experience as positive.
Conclusions
- No early intervention strategy in place - this needs rectifying.
- People want to be listened to, have earlier diagnosis and be supported to develop skills for managing life with Autism.
- Multi-professional single meeting assessments as used in Manchester were considered a good way forward.
- Sensory, speech and language and occupational therapist input provided at the outset were considered essential.
- Peer support is highly valued in the community.
- Hardly anyone was offered any tech related support and their was a lot of interest in trying targeted apps, reote support and tech monitoring devices in the home.
